Sandburg Baseball Takes 2 at Home Against Highland

After getting swept at Highland on Sunday, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team returned the favor Tuesday, taking both ends of an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader against the Cougars at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

Key Moment
Down 4-3 in the second, the Chargers’ first six batters of the inning reached safely as they scored four runs without the benefit of a hit. Four walks and two hit batsmen put Sandburg ahead 6-4, and a run-scoring double play accounted for the last run of the frame. Sandburg had just two base hits in the game but drew nine walks, had three batters reach after getting hit by a pitch and stole five bases.

Sandburg Standout
Shortstop Cam Scott (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) accounted for both Chargers hits with a pair of singles, drew a base on balls, was hit by a pitch, scored three times and swiped two bases.

Key Moment
Leading 2-1 in the third, Sandburg (6-15, 2-2) put together a three-run rally behind four straight two-out hits. Israel homered to center, and a Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) single and Ashton Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) double put two runners in scoring position. Austin Collinson (Normal, Ill./Normal West) brought both home with a single up the middle for a 5-1 lead.

Sandburg Standout
Center fielder Ben Higgins (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) went 2 for 3 with a double, triple, walk, two runs, an RBI and two steals.
